about KAREN

Welcome to a visual journey that transcends the ordinary – where every image captures not just a moment, but a powerful narrative of inclusion and empowerment. I am a seasoned photographer based in the vibrant city of Glasgow, with over two decades of experience dedicated to capturing the beauty of diversity and the resilience of the human spirit.

At the heart of my practice lies a profound belief in the transformative power of photography. I am on a mission to amplify the voices of those who often find themselves on the periphery of mainstream representation. In a world where visibility is synonymous with belonging, my lens becomes a tool for empowerment, giving marginalized individuals a sense of identity and a place to call their own.

BEYOND

My work goes beyond the confines of traditional photography. It is a commitment to social change, a visual manifesto that challenges the status quo. I collaborate with organisations at the forefront of societal transformation, fusing the artistry of photography with the pragmatism of policy-making. It’s an approach that marries optimism with a methodical dedication to achieving tangible results.

What sets me apart is not just my extensive experience but the ethos that guides every frame. Respect is not just a word; it’s a cornerstone of my practice. Each image is a testament to the dignity and uniqueness of the individuals I capture. I believe that fostering genuine connections with the subjects is as crucial as the visual impact of the final product.

MY EXPERIENCE

My track record speaks volumes about my unwavering commitment to social issues and the arts, not just in the west of Scotland but beyond. I have been a catalyst for positive change, using my lens to tell stories that matter. As I stand on the intersection of photography and activism, my optimism is grounded in the tangible impact I’ve witnessed.

Presently, I am honored to have an ongoing exhibition, “Putting Ourselves in the Picture,” at the prestigious Kelvingrove Art Gallery, commissioned by Migrant Voice. This exhibition is a testament to the power of visual storytelling in reshaping narratives and fostering inclusivity.

Furthermore, I’ve ignited conversations at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, with my exhibition titled “Everyday Racism,” delving into personal stories of resilience and resistance. My work has also graced the walls of the Centre of Contemporary Art and the Scottish Parliament with “Engaging Pictures,” amplifying voices that demand to be heard.
